Membership in a group is not a right.Â
Real membership in a group or organization is a privilege and should be treated as such by group members and gatekeepers. In order to be integrated and truly involved in a group, an individual must understand the group’s culture, be actively involved in the group’s work and committed to the group’s goals. This is not a test to be passed, but a realization that groups need to consciously bring new members in. A healthy organization works hard to initiate and assimilate new members with this in mind. New employees will be more easily assimilated when they appreciate the values and vision of the organization and come from a stance of learning and gratitude. This said, they may still be “team players†and contribute a different point of view, resolve conflict and work toward collaboration.
